Why 3am thinking lies

The same problem, examined at two different times, produces two different people.

Overnight, cortisol rises toward waking, prefrontal regulation is at its lowest, and the brain is exceptionally good at generating threat and exceptionally poor at generating solutions. This is a physiological state, not a moment of clarity.

The content of 3am thinking is usually real. The conclusions are usually wrong — disproportionately catastrophic, disproportionately certain, disproportionately about your character rather than your circumstances.

One rule helps more than any technique: no decisions and no verdicts between midnight and morning. Write the thought down, name it as a night thought, and return to it in daylight with the same seriousness you would give a friend's problem.

Most people find that roughly one in ten night thoughts survives contact with the morning. The other nine were weather.
